UNDERSTANDING SUN EXPOSURE
Sunlight includes more than one type of radiation. Understanding the spectrum makes it easier to choose and use sun care thoughtfully.
ULTRAVIOLET A
Long-wave ultraviolet light (320–400 nm). Present year-round, including through cloud and glass. Skin damage: Reaches the dermis. Breaks down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, sagging and uneven tone. Indirect DNA damage; adds to skin-cancer risk. No immediate burn.
ULTRAVIOLET B
Short-wave ultraviolet light (290–320 nm). Strongest at midday and in summer. Hits the epidermis. Causes sunburn and direct DNA damage — the main driver of skin cancer. Also contributes to ageing and pigmentation.
VISIBLE LIGHT
High-energy visible (blue-violet) light, about 400–450 nm. From sun and screens; sun is the main outdoor source. Reaches the dermis. Causes oxidative stress, photoaging and stubborn dark marks — especially in medium-to-darker skin. Does not cause sunburn. SPF alone does not cover it.
INFRARED
Near-infrared heat radiation (760–1400 nm). A large part of sunlight; felt as warmth. Reaches deep dermis. Raises free radicals and MMP-1, which degrade collagen. Leads to wrinkles and loss of firmness. Not blocked by standard UV filters.
